ABOUT US - Folk Music and Dance Ensemble OSŁAWIANY
On the banks of the Osława river,
separating the Bieszczady Mountains from Beskid Niski Mountains, there is a
picturesque Mokre village situated. Mokre is one of very few villages in the
Osława river valley where the past tradition has survived so we may still see,
hear and feel old customs and dialect.
Beyond any doubts the folk music and dance group Osławiany plays the most
important role in keeping and handing down this rich tradition and culture to
next generations.
The group was formed in 1972 as a part of then Ukrainian Social and Cultural
Association in Poland. One of the initiators of setting up Osławiany and its
manager of many years was Eugeniusz Mohyła. Today the group - directed now by
Marzena Onyszkanycz - still works in a close cooperation with the Organization of
Ukrainians in Poland and promotes Ukraine culture in Poland.
Osławiany group is gathering people (schoolchildren, students, full time workers)
who care for their ancestors' traditions and who enjoy passing the riches of the
cultural heritage of Ukrainian people to younger generations - therefore all of
them willingly participate in cultivating these important values.
For more than 30 years of its continuous artistic activity the group Osławiany
has participated in many international folk feasts and has given a lot of
concerts both in Poland (e.g. during Beskidy Culture Week, Ukrainian Culture
Festival in Sopot, Lemko Vatra Festival in Zdynia, or Europe without frontiers
and Community in Culture festivals ) and abroad (in Canada, the USA, Ukraine,
Slovak Republic, Germany) - always presenting the richness of Ukrainian culture
and tradition.
The group Osławiany has participated as well in the Television Festival Horycwit
in Ukraine and appeared on such Polish TV programmes as Kawa czy herbata,
Swojskie klimaty. The group has also recorded a cassette and a CD album with
its music.
On account of a significant contribution in spreading Ukrainian culture in
Poland, Osławiany has been given numerous letters of thanks and gratitude
from the Polish Ministry of Culture.
Since 1991 the Osławiany group has been a coorganiser of Culture Festival
By Osława in Mokre. It is a significant artistic event in this part
of Poland as it makes possible for a wider range of people to come across
with a multicultural diversity of this region and to see the output of the
group's activity so far. What is more, the festival is an excellent occasion
to get in touch with other folk groups from Poland, Ukraine or Slovak Republic.
Colourful repertoire of Osławiany group comprises of folk songs and dances
mainly from the Lemkos' and the Boykos' homelands, but there are some songs
and dances from Carpathian Ruthenia, the Hutsuls country and other parts of
Ukraine as well.
We have also a Christmas programme including carols and traditional Wertep
(a nativity play).
In 2006 the group produced with the help of Cieszyn Theatre Studio a show
Dobosz - a performance based on a great Hutsul epic poem On a high
mountain pasture (Na wysokiej połoninie) written by Stanislaw Vincenz.
In 1996 the group Osławiany recorded a cassette and a CD album, included
in a series: Folk groups of South-Eastern Poland, UKRAINIAN FOLK MUSIC.
The recording was made by Polonia RECORDS in December 1996 in Polish Radio
Studio in Rzeszów.
